Kiriko’s canon history is actively contradictory by nature (thanks, Blizzard!), so I crafted a personal timeline I’ll be using. It can be found here. It hits all the same beats as canon, but is slightly streamlined.

Personality:

If asked, one could easily call Kiriko a rule breaker, a trickster at heart. She is someone who bends the rules to her own liking as she sees fit. Kiriko doesn’t respect rules or institutions that hurt people. She’s prone to finding loopholes and gaps in rules to squeeze herself through. Rarely does Kiriko actively listen to authority or play nice with expectations. She is through and through rebellious to her core.

She was raised with the expectation of following one of two paths, a more traditional path of a Shrine Maiden from her grandmother or the more modern path of Ninjutsu presented by her mother. Kiriko opted to take both options and blend them together into something new and unexpected. Kiriko’s natural independence means she wanted both ways of life her family presented her without having to compromise herself in the process. Kiriko does not like compromising who she is for other people. This Independent streak is only more obvious given Kiriko’s penchant for making her own way through life. When she sees an injustice that truly angers her, Kiriko doesn’t have much in the way of hesitation in resolving the issue herself. She tends to take things into her own hands even if it's decidedly unwise. She chose to come back to Kanezaka, her hometown, against her mother's wishes to settle in and defy the Hashimoto gang. She intends to protect her home from the yakuza gang that has taken it over. This also means Kiriko can and will get over her head by taking on too much at once. Independence and rebelliousness paired together means Kiriko thinks she can handle a problem, then quickly realizes far too late that no, no she cannot.

Even with lofty goals, Kiriko isn’t someone who is particularly serious. She is exceptionally affable when it comes to interacting with people. She makes a habit of getting to know her neighbors by name, and regularly making conversation with them. Even if the person seems outright intimidating or uninterested in interacting, Kiriko will naturally approach them regardless to try to make conversation. It doesn’t always work, but it has yet to actually stop her from trying.

This natural outgoing behavior means Kiriko is prone to making friends wherever she goes, if not that, at least new enemies she has left a lasting impression upon. Kiriko loves having a good time, joking around, and challenging others to games when she sees her chance. Friend or foe, she’ll attempt to play first, bite later. When first meeting Zarya or Pharah, Kiriko’s first instinct is to challenge both of them to beat her at basketball or jogging.

This outgoing behavior also means Kiriko has a tendency to overstay her welcome with people. She pushes buttons without meaning too, or invades people’s spaces by trying to befriend them. She has the ability to read the mood and back off, but sometimes it takes her a moment to realize she is pushing a bit too far.

Even with how outgoing and naturally friendly she is, it doesn’t mean Kiriko is a pushover when it comes to confrontation. She pushes back when confronted by someone, or having a jibe thrown her way. Kiriko is decidedly thick skinned. Her strong sense of self, and usually lets most things roll off her back. Someone actively giving her a hard time usually elicits a laugh or a snarky comment back in turn from Kiriko. She is emotionally very open as a person, but is decidedly hard to hurt.

She can be particularly blunt when the time calls for it. She usually persists with a good humored response, but if truly angered she can be decidedly cutting with her remarks. She doesn’t hesitate to just lay the truth on the other person, even if it's not pretty. She will also readily take a dig at someone if she thinks they’re acting out. Kiriko also bluntly cuts to the heart of a matter as needed. Sombra tries to tease Kiriko with information, hinting she has taped recordings of the Hashimoto’s calls. Kiriko immediately jumps to talking about payment, not about to play around with important information.

Sombra: You'll never guess what I heard when I tapped the Hashimoto's calls.
Kiriko: I don't do guesses. What's your price?
Sombra: *tongue click* I have a feeling we're going to get along.

When challenged by Pharah about being a criminal, Kiriko does not back down from the topic, but holds fast to her beliefs and makes sure Pharah knows where she stands.

Pharah: I don't work with criminals.
Kiriko: What's right isn't always what's legal.
Pharah: Then you change the laws.
Kiriko: Easy for you to say.

Kiriko is most decidedly a resourceful person, who rarely backs down from a challenge when presented to her. Even when things seem stacked against her, Kiriko will find a way to make things work. She knows she’s fighting a system so much bigger than her, so she needs to actively be clever, work harder and faster than her enemy. She helped form the yokai gang out of stray misfits living in Kanezaka. Kiriko uses her natural environment to her advantage during fights, just as much as she leans on her teammates' strengths, and covers for their weaknesses. She formed the yokai gang out of local misfits wanting to get back at the Hashimoto gang. They regularly disrupt the Hashimoto’s criminal activities whilst only really being a group of college students/young adults with no real financial resources unlike the Yakuza. Kiriko can turn around a dire situation

Kiriko is also equally very spiritual. Growing up around a positive protective spirit that she could interact and bond with means Kiriko is decidedly more open minded to the world of spirits, magic and what else lay out there. Her connection with the fox spirit has left its mark on her as a person, leaving her more openly inclined to believe in high powers and there being other possibilities than the ones before your eyes. She acknowledges the existence of spirits across the spectrum of alignment, from pure benevolent to pure malevolent, and easily understands the unspoken rules that often accompany such beings.

For all the kindness and compassion on display, Kiriko can also be described as vengeful. Her burning grudge against the Hashimotos is one of her strongest motivators for what she does with her life. Sure, there are good intentions there (Freeing her hometown, seeing her father again), but she also wants to squeeze the life out of the Hashimoto. She doesn’t hesitate to go for lethal attacks against the gang members or scare them. She has a sharp vengeful streak that leaks into her interactions with authority figures or people who she believes have betrayed her. When someone crosses her, Kiriko will not forget it, and will nurse that grudge into eternity. Add that to her competitive streak, it makes for an awful combination.

Kiriko, whilst driven, outgoing and rebellious, is also lazy. When comfortable, she will let herself relax a little too much and let others handle responsibilities she isn’t interested in. She in particular has gotten too comfortable with the powers granted to her by the fox spirit. Kiriko ends up leaning into those strengths instead of making herself stronger without them. Kiriko put off training with her mother for a long time after returning to Kanezaka due to wanting to avoid her mother’s nagging and reliance on the fox spirit protecting her. She assumed she would be more than fine without that additional training, since she had protection. Why should she change what is comfortable when she’s already doing so great? Thankfully, Kiriko can be shaken out of this laziness by a shock to the system. Kiriko can motivate herself to stop being lazy, but when it crops up, it leaves her unsteady for what is to come.
